of Heaven. Have lunch, visit the Jietai Temple in the
afternoon. Transfer back to your hotel.
Temple: The temple was built in 622 and remains as only one of three initiation platforms left in China. Built on a hill, the temple runs sideways, but the main gate still faces south as required by Buddhist tradition. The 10-ft.-high platform is in the northwestern part of the temple. There is also a Mahavira Hall, with a Thousand Buddha Hall behind it. Throughout the temple grounds (up the hill) are a number of small Liao and Yuan dynasty pagodas. Jietai Temple is also known for its old pine trees, lilacs and peony. Jietai Temple boasts 1,000 lilac trees, among which 20 have an age over 200 years. Whenever the lilacs bloom, in mid and late April every year, the temple is impregnated with the fragrance of lilacs.
of Heaven: It is a circular construction, the 38-metre-high Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests which is topped by a triple-eaved roof. No beams or purlins were used in the construction of the hall. Instead, the whole structure is supported by wooden mortise and tenon joints and wooden brackets on huge pillars. Another impressive structure in the Temple of Heaven is the Imperial Vault of Heaven with glazed colour tiles. Leading to the entrance of the Imperial Vault of Heaven are the Three Echo Stones . Surrounding the structure is the Echo Wall where visitors can stand and hear their whispers echo long distances along the wall.
